A call for help to all eco-activists

I think now a days it is easy to forget how wealthy and abundant our way of living is, compared to other generations and times. Why do we need huge and colossal or just wasteful works of art? I am referring, in particular, to visual arts as sculpture, painting, installation, etc, basically every work of art created in modern or contemporary context, with a capitalist mind set and without a ecofriendly approach. Giving the current ecological crises, why should we continue to create and appreciate art that contributes to a pollutant useless industry, when are better options to fulfil our aesthetic pleasure. Of course, it can be argued that art it’s not only aesthetic but also conceptual, critic and a bold way of development of society, however we already have other intellectual methods to achieve this, such as philosophy, anthropology, sociology, internet, activism, and even art that is made without wasting natural resources.  It is estimated that “a life cycle of an artwork – from design to production, then when it is being exhibited, conserved, and if there is one, at its end-of-life”1, implicates a waste of energy, transportation, resources, residential, commercial and institutional sectors, that are one of the leading contributors to carbon emissions and climate change, and can also be, sometimes, a danger to human health, because of the use of toxic chemicals, that are release into the world.

After or as a result of this, I call for help. I ask you to protest. This is a project that I been working on, in the last two years, for my college theses. As way to demonstrate a possibility of making art globally, without compromising the environment, I invite you to be part of the movement, by:

    -          Going to the front entrance, or even if you can inside, of your local modern or contemporary art museum, and bring a tree branch with leaves.

    -          The next step is to film or photograph yourself, with a camera or a phone and simulate the act of hitting yourself with the branch in your back or hand, like it was self-flagellation or masochism. (you do not need to hurt yourself, you also can choose between being or not without a shirt for a bigger impact, if inside the museum don’t put yourself in harm's way with the security and try to catch something that is recognisable of the museum such as the building or a work of art, I leave to your choosing the artistic angle of the camera).

    -          Finally send it to the e-mail address

The goal, it is to manifest the guilt we fill when looking or creating art that is harmful to the environment, in the current time, and to draw the attention of the art world and the museum institution to this non-conformity and desire for change.

Finally, the compilation of videos and photos will be exposed on the internet and hopefully in a physical exhibition, (giving the covid state). And even if you can’t do it, you can share it with a friend.

CALL FOR ECO-ARTISTS!
DEADLINE: Jan 1st

Lay of the Land: The Terrain of the 21st Century:

Lay of the Land focuses on the vital role land and terrain play in the biodiversity of an ecosystem. It approaches the landscape of the natural world as a platform to document the current environmental crises facing us, nationally and internationally.

Our environment and the world are in constant flux with climate change, pollution, and natural disasters. Throughout the 20th and 21st century, the calls to action for land and wildlife preservation and ultimately sustainability have altered our landscapes.

How do we accurately depict cityscapes or urban landscapes with the growth of trash heaps in major cities? Do artists ignore the oil tanks on the horizon of the ocean when painting? Are warning and information signs from nature preserves or botanical gardens in artist’s drawings of birds or plants?
